Plex — getting started

Plex is how I share my movie, TV, and music collection with you. You can watch on your phone, tablet, computer, smart TV, or streaming stick — basically anything with a screen and an internet connection.

It works a lot like Netflix: you open an app, pick something, and press play. The difference is the library is mine, not a company's, so there are no ads and nothing disappears overnight.

What you'll need

[]{.success} An internet connection []{.success} A free Plex account (I'll send you an invite) []{.success} Any device — phone, tablet, computer, smart TV, or streaming stick

It's free for you

Watching my library costs you nothing. I handle the subscription on my end, so you won't be asked to pay. If you ever see a prompt about a "Remote Watch Pass" or "Plex Pass," you can ignore it — it's covered. See Troubleshooting if it gets in the way.

Step 1 — Create a free Plex account

You can do this before or after I send you an invite. If you do it first, the invite will show up automatically once I send it.

  1. Go to plex.tv.
  2. Click Sign Up in the top right.
  3. Sign up with Google, Apple, Facebook, or an email + password.
  4. Check your email and click the verification link if Plex sends one.
  5. Done — you now have a Plex account.
  1. Download the Plex app (see Step 3).
  2. Open it and tap Sign Up.
  3. Follow the same prompts as above.

Use an email I know

Tell me which email you used so I can invite that exact address. If the invite goes to a different address than your account, it won't connect.

Step 2 — Accept my invite

Once I add you, you'll get an invitation one of two ways. You only need to do this once.

  1. Look for an email from Plex with the subject line about a shared library or server invitation.
  2. Click the Accept Invitation button in the email.
  3. If you're not already signed in, you'll be asked to sign in with the Plex account you created in Step 1.
  4. That's it — my server is now linked to your account.
  1. Go to app.plex.tv and sign in.
  2. Open Settings (the wrench/gear icon, top right).
  3. Go to Manage Library Access.
  4. Look under Library Invitations Received.
  5. Click the green checkmark next to my server to accept.

Check spam

The invite email sometimes lands in spam or the "Promotions" tab in Gmail. Search your inbox for plex if you don't see it within a few minutes.

No invite yet?

Message me and I'll send one. I need the email address tied to your Plex account — invites are sent to a specific address.

Step 3 — Install the Plex app on your device

Plex has apps for almost everything. Pick yours:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Search for Plex.
  3. Install the app called "Plex: Watch Live TV and Movies" (by Plex Inc.).
  4. Open it and sign in with your Plex account.
  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Plex.
  3. Install the app by Plex Inc.
  4. Open it and sign in with your Plex account.
  1. Go to app.plex.tv.
  2. Sign in. That's the whole app — nothing to install.
  1. Go to plex.tv/media-server-downloads.
  2. Download Plex for Desktop (not "Plex Media Server" — that's for people running their own server, which you don't need).
  3. Install and sign in.
  1. Open the App Store on your Apple TV.
  2. Search for Plex.
  3. Install and sign in.
  1. On your Roku, go to Streaming ChannelsSearch Channels.
  2. Search for Plex.
  3. Add the channel and sign in.
  1. On your Fire TV, go to FindSearch.
  2. Search for Plex.
  3. Download and sign in.
  1. Open your TV's app store (Samsung Smart Hub, LG Content Store, Vizio SmartCast, etc.).
  2. Search for Plex.
  3. Install and sign in.

No Plex app for your TV?

If your TV doesn't have a Plex app, a cheap streaming stick (Roku, Fire Stick, or Apple TV) plugs into an HDMI port and solves it. Tell me if you need a recommendation.

Plex is available on PlayStation and Xbox from their respective stores. Search for "Plex," install, and sign in.

Step 4 — Find my library and start watching

Once you're signed in, my server should appear automatically. If you have trouble, the steps below will surface it.

  1. Open Plex on your device.
  2. Look for a source or server picker — on most apps it's under the logo/icon in the top left, or a "More" / "Sources" menu.
  3. You'll see my server listed (it's named <Your-Server-Name> — fill this in with your actual server name).
  4. Select it. You'll see libraries like:

    • Movies
    • TV Shows
    • Music (lossless — sounds great on good speakers/headphones)
    • Home Movies
  5. Pick a library, browse, and press play.

Pin my server for easy access

On most apps you can pin or favorite my server so it's the first thing you see when you open Plex. Look for a pin icon next to the server name.

About the music library

The music is stored in lossless quality (FLAC). It sounds better than streaming services, but it also uses more data — on cellular, consider enabling a lower quality in the app's settings if you're on a metered plan.

What's in the library?

A quick map of what's available:

Library What's in it Notes
Movies Tons of films, organized by genre/collection Most in 1080p; some 4K
TV Shows Complete series, organized by show → season → episode New episodes added as I get them
Music Lossless (FLAC) albums Use the Plexamp app (below) for the best music experience
Home Movies Family video clips Private to us — not shared with anyone outside the family

Plexamp — for music

Plexamp is Plex's dedicated music app — nicer interface, better for browsing albums, and great for lossless playback. Separate download:

  • iOS: App Store → search "Plexamp"
  • Android: Play Store → search "Plexamp"
  • Desktop: plexamp.com

Sign in with the same Plex account; my music library shows up there automatically.

Tips for a good experience

  • If playback is buffering, lower the quality: while playing, open the settings (gear icon) → Quality → pick a lower number like 2 Mbps or 720p.
  • On Wi-Fi at home, you can usually max it out. On cellular, 720p is a safe default.
  • While playing, look for a speech bubble icon to toggle subtitles.
  • For audio language (when available), use the audio icon or settings menu during playback.
  • Video can eat through data quickly. In the app's settings, look for Cellular Data Limit or Quality on Cellular and set it to something reasonable (e.g. 1–2 Mbps or 720p).
  • Consider downloading movies to your phone over Wi-Fi first — open a movie, tap the download icon, then watch offline later.
  • If you want kid-friendly content only, ask me and I can set up a Managed User for your household with its own PIN and a filtered library.

Troubleshooting

It says I need a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass

You don't — this is covered on my end. This prompt appears because Plex changed its remote-streaming policy in April 2025. As long as you're signed in with the account I invited, you should be able to watch.

If it's actually blocking playback (not just a banner):

  1. Fully close the Plex app and reopen it.
  2. Sign out and sign back in.
  3. Make sure you're signed into the same account you used to accept my invite — not a second account you may have accidentally created.
  4. If it still blocks you, message me — there was a known bug where the prompt appeared even for users who didn't need it, and a server restart on my end clears it.

Bottom line: don't buy anything. If a screen is asking you to pay, talk to me first.

My server isn't showing up
  • Confirm you're signed into the Plex account you used to accept the invite (not a different one).
  • In the app, look for Sources or More and check if the server is listed but just not pinned.
  • Try signing out and back in.
  • If you accepted the invite by email but never actually clicked through to sign in, the link may have expired — ask me to resend.
Playback keeps buffering
  • Lower the quality during playback (gear icon → Quality).
  • If you're far from your Wi-Fi router, move closer or switch to a 5 GHz network.
  • On cellular, switch to a lower quality setting in app preferences.
  • If it's consistently bad, message me — I can check the server and my upload bandwidth.
A movie or show won't play / says 'Conversion failed'
  • This is usually a one-off transcode hiccup on my end. Try restarting the item, or try a different one. Let me know the title so I can look into it.
I can't find home movies

The Home Movies library may not be shared with everyone by default. Ask me and I'll add it to your access.

Can I download things to watch offline?

Yes — on mobile apps, open a movie or episode and tap the download icon. It saves to your device for offline viewing. (Not available on TVs or the web app.)

Can I use my own Plex account elsewhere too?

Yes — your Plex account is yours. You can use it on other servers if someone else shares with you, or even set up your own server someday. It doesn't interfere with access to mine.

Will my watch history sync across devices?

Yes — "Continue Watching" and your Watchlist follow you across all your devices because they're tied to your Plex account, not the device.

Need help?

If anything in here doesn't work, or you're stuck on a step, just message me — I'm happy to walk you through it. The most common issues are:

  • Wrong account signed in (you accidentally made two)
  • Invite went to a different email than the one you signed up with
  • App needs a sign-out / sign-in refresh after accepting the invite

If you can tell me which device you're using and what you see on screen, I can usually sort it out in a couple of minutes.
